Firstly we need to understand..what are antioxidants?

There have even been headlines recently, claiming that too may antioxidants can actually be harmful to your health.

So, can sprinkling a few berries on your morning muesli really make a difference?

Well, if you didn't already know, antioxidants fight free radicals. Now, free radicals have been linked to serious conditions such as heart disease and cancer to name just a few. But surprisingly, we actually need them, and they are not necessarily villans.

They are simply by-products of a vital metabolic process known as oxidation.

To give you an illustration of oxidation, take an apple and cut it in half. Leave it standing for about a couple hours (or sooner and come back to it. Do you notice it has started to go brown in colour? That is oxidation. In other words, it's 'rusting up'..and that's exactly what happens to our bodies when free radicals go mad!

Strange as it may seem, free radicals are essential for life. They are an important part of our bodies defence mechanism. For instance, immune cells shoot free radicals into invading bacteria to kill them 'dead in the water'.

It's the over-production of them that big trouble arises.

How do they over-produce?



Simple..pollution, chemicals, UV rays, stress hormones, breathing, basically every-day life can cause them to go into over-drive. The result is cell damage, leaving you an 'open target' to disease.

If these FR's are not treated, then the following health problems could happen...

  • Cancer..by affecting a cell's genetic material
  • Heart Disease..by damaging cell walls
  • Cataracts..by the breaking down of cellur structures in your eyes
  • Arthritis..by pulling the trigger on inflammation.
