Healthy Smoothie Recipes..All The Ingredients For a Longer Life!
Healthy Smoothie Recipes. This is where you get creative....Ok, roll your sleeves up, get the blender out because we are going to make smoothies.
But these are not any old smoothies. These are going to be very healthy and nutritious,
bursting with antioxidants
to help
fight free radicals
and slow down the aging process. Ok, are you ready then...?Here goes....Healthy Smoothie Recipes How to Make Healthy Antioxidant Smoothies Before we start, it's important to get the right ingredients and balance. What we are looking for is a stack of phytonutrients, vitamins and enzymes that come in a whole food form. These types are digested and absorbed very easily. In fact making smoothies can be great creative fun, but because there are soo many possibilities it can be a little overwhelming, however if you are just throwing any old thing in then there is a danger of your smoothie ending up as a sugar and calorie laden behemoth! Sure, it tastes great, but healthy? NO!
So what we are looking for here are smoothies made with
antioxidant superfoods,
combined with a variety mix of
antioxidant fruits
vegetables. These are the quickest to make and are also very dense in nutrients. Ok, let's start with our healthy smoothie recipes. First up, you will need a good blender.
The majority of smoothies require a certain amount of liquid to assist the contents to move around in the blender easily and also to achieve the correct consistancy. You can use water for a real low-calorie smoothie. Stick to pure, filtered water, or even
antioxidant water.
Ice can also be used to chill and thin-down your smoothie. Fruit juice can be used but a warning here. Be careful and only use in moderation. They are high in fructose. Yes, I hear you say 'but fructose is natural', however too much in one go can cause weight gain. What happens is that it goes straight to your liver where it is converted too fat. Result? You will gain weight faster than a Usain Bolt 40 yard dash! You don't want that happening do you? The best way to slow down the fructose rush is by having the right balance of fibre, protein and fat in your smoothie.
If you are unsure at this point about how foods affect our blood sugar levels and general health, take a trip over to
The Glycemic Website
it's a marvellous site and you will learn a bunch from it. Steer very clear of high-processed juices. They have been virtually stripped of their nutrients. Stick to freshly-squeezed juices, then you can't go wrong.
Milk or Yogurt. Which one? Well I can really open a can of worms here as there is conjecture and arguements that pasteurized dairy products are not a healthy choice. There is enough information on the internet for you to make your own choice. For the sake of a large debate, it's best to stick to dairy substitutes, that way you cannot go wrong. I personally use a zero-fat Greek Yoghurt, it's absolutely delicious.
Also, beware of Soy milk or products..again, here is another questionable choice. Believed to be a healthy alternative to dairy for many years, it is now thought to be an unhealthy choice. Again, do your research and use what you are comfortable or happy with. A suggestion for dairy substitutes could be Nut Milk, hemp, rice milk or almond milk..these can be used without any issues. Best Antioxidant Healthy Smoothie Recipes
This my great starter that I take first thing in the morning to kick-start me. There are no hard and fast rules for ingredients (as long as they are healthy). That will depend on where you live in the world and the time of year etc.. I generally use frozen fruits, especially
berries
because they have exactly the same nutritional value as fresh fruits, as they are available all year round. 1 Banana1 medium sized cup of fresh or frozen berries1 heaped tablespoon Greek Yoghurt (0% fat)2 cups of orange or pineapple juice, freshly squeezed or similarA handful of strawberries..again fresh or frozen(Optional) I add one tablespoon 15g of my favorite Dr Schulze's SuperFood Plus. This has the finest range of protein and phytonutrients available. So, now we have a great low calorie, nutritional blend of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Drink immediately after making it. Tips on blending. Don't overload the jar. Blend until liquified. This can take up to a minute long depending on your model of blenders power. Chill Out! Add a few ice cubes to cool it, however if you are using frozen fruit then that may not be necessary. Adjust the thickness as you go along. For instance, adding more superfood or fruit to thicken or add more liquid to thin it out.
The beauty of smoothies is that you can experiment freely and be creative, so using any combo of fruits or vegetables is just fine. But a caveat, beware of increasing the sugar content of your smoothie too much. If anything, to play safe, increase the vegetable ratio if you have to. What I tend to do for variety is alternating my smoothies daily. One day fruit, the other vegetables. Adding dark green vegetables are an excellent way to get a powerful antioxidant smoothie, the taste may not be to everyone's liking though, and masking the taste may be hard to do. An alternative can be powdered superfoods. The one I use, Dr. Schulzes is very powerful, with up to three times as much antioxidant capacity in just one tablespoon. This means I can use less and actually blend the taste more easily. There are many other products to choose from on the market, however choose wisely. Other recommendations are chlorella,
spirulina
or freeze dried wheatgrass.
Try and add some fiber in the smoothie. I sometimes add Flaxseed powder. It is a rich natural source of Omega 3, high in protein, vitamis and minerals and low carb. You could also use
coconut oil
or maybe hemp powder, both similar to Flax seed. The coconut oil will add a rich creaminess to your smoothie. So there you have it. You are in the driving seat to create you own powerful antioxidant healthy smoothie recipes, vegetable smoothie or any smoothie that takes your fancy. Just remember one rule...keep it a healthy nutritional smoothie! See more smoothie recipes and information on making fruit smoothies
