Carrot Juice Benefits For Fighting Certain Cancers and Better Vision
Carrot Juice Benefits
Carrot juice has long been considered a powerful antioxidant beverage with many health benefits, and now research at Newcastle University, UK has discovered (and isolated) a certain compound found in carrots called falcarinol.
This compound is believed to help fight
cancer.
Rats that were fed this particular compound, or raw carrot juice, on top of what normal food they would eat, actually had a one-third lower risk of colorectal cancer developing than the rats that were not given the compound falcarinol.
Now, interestingly falcarinol is a pesticide..now before you go mumbling that pesticides are not good for us, this type of pesticide is a natural one. It is only found in carrots and good old Mother Nature has put it there for good reason..to protect the vegetable against fungal diseases. As far as our (human) diet goes..there is no other source of falcarinol to be found anywhere else, only in carrots. So, just how good are carrots for us?
Very good indeed..and yes, they are also excellent for our eyes, or vision too. They will maintain (but not improve) the quality of our vision. But it goes far beyond that. Apart from the compound falcarinol, they contain a variety of other compounds that are believed to help prevent certain cancers, lower cholesterol, and prevent heart attacks.
Carrots are one of the richest sources of carotenoids available..by far. Beta-carotene is responsible for giving the vegetable its bold, brash orange color, and also for providing many of the health benefits it's associated with. Beta-carotene is an
antioxidant
compound that is able to tackle and
fight free radicals,
those unstable molecules we cannot avoid in our bodies, and cause untold damage, disease and premature aging. Large-population studies have shown that people with low levels of beta carotene in their bodies are more open to developing certain cancers, especially those of the stomach and lungs. In fact, another antioxidant called alpha-carotene give carrots another protective edge along with beta-carotene. One study at the National Cancer Institute found that there was a higher occurence of lung cancer in men who had low intakes of alpha-carotene, compared to men who had more.
Carrot Juice Benefits For Better Vision
Not so much a cure, but more of a maintainance package. The beta carotene in carrots converts to vitamin A in the body. This will, amongst other things, improve vision. Just ask any World War II pilot (if you can find any!). Researchers back in those days, cultivated carrots that were high in beta-carotene to improve their night vision.Vitamin A forms a purple pigment which is located in the light-sensitive arear of the retina, called rhodopsin, and this what the eye needs to be able to see in dim light. The more vitamin A you get, the more rhodopsin your body is able to produce. No more bumping into people or seats in a dark cinema or theater! Not only do you get better vision, carrots could also protect your vision too. Studies found that chomping carotenoid-rich stuff was linked to a 36 per cent lower risk of age related macular degeneration..one of the most common causes of severe vision loss in the elderly.
Carrot Juice Benefits..Will Eating Lots of Them Make Me Go Orange?
Yes, possibly. It's a condition called carotenosis, in which the skin turns a faint orange hue. It can resemble the color of jaundiced skin. So if you enjoy a few too many of the vegetable..watch out for it. For overall health improvement 2 carrots daily is the recommended amount. Preferably fresh, raw and organic.
Carrot Juice Benefits..Quick Power Drink Recipes
For a simple carrot juice recipe simply pop 2-3 raw carrots in a blender. Apparently, by processing carrots in a blender, the fibers are broken apart, this allows the beta-carotene to be released. By doing this you will get the most from the carrots. If you really want a potent drink incorporating this outstanding vegetable then try this... Carrot Juice Power Drink - 4 Carrots
- 1 washed Kiwi Fruit
- 1 handful of baby spinach leaves
- 1 small handful of fresh coriander (including stems)
Wash everything, peel, top and tail the carrots, don't need to if they are organic. Don't peel the kiwi fruit. Pop into a juicer, saving a few coriander leaves. Mix thoroughly, then serve with the remaining coriander leaves on top. Lots of goodies in this antioxidant juice. The carrots and spinach providing a double whammy of beta-carotene as well as potassium, magnesium and lots of plant chemicals and vitamin C all combined. Raw carrot juice can be easily purchased from most good supermarkets, however it is better to buy organic if possible.
